Mines Strategy: Odds, Multipliers and a Free Calculator (2026)

Short version: no Mines strategy changes the odds. Whether you reveal one tile or ten, the expected return per round is your bet times the RTP (100% inside Duel’s daily Zero Edge allowance, 99.9% beyond it). The mine count and the number of picks only decide how that return arrives, from frequent small cash-outs to rare big ones. Below you will find exact survival odds for a 5×5 grid, the picks needed to reach 2x, 5x and 10x, and a free calculator. The game itself is on our Duel Mines page.

How Mines Works on a 5×5 Grid

Mines hides a number of mines that you choose on a 25-tile grid. You reveal tiles one at a time. Every safe tile raises your multiplier, and you can cash out whenever you like before you hit a mine. One mine ends the round and you lose the bet.

On Duel the grid comes from the server seed, client seed and nonce before your first click, and you can check it afterwards in the Provably Fair tab. That means the mines do not move after you pick, and a new round uses a fresh nonce, so what happened last round tells you nothing about this one.

Survival chance = C(25 − mines, picks) ÷ C(25, picks) on a 5×5 grid. Multiplier = RTP ÷ survival chance. Duel’s displayed payouts may round slightly.

The pattern is the same in every row: the multiplier is simply 1 ÷ the chance of surviving, a hair lower at 99.9% RTP. That is what makes the game fair. The higher the multiplier you chase, the less likely you are to reach it, and the two cancel out exactly.

Free Mines Calculator

The calculator needs JavaScript. You can read the same numbers from the odds table above.

Set the mine count and the number of safe tiles you plan to reveal. The calculator returns your chance of surviving, the chance of hitting a mine and the multiplier you would cash out at.

How Many Picks Does It Take?

Mines First pick count that pays 2x or more 5x or more 10x or more
1 mine 13 picks (2.08x, 48.0%) 20 picks (5.00x, 20.0%) 23 picks (12.50x, 8.00%)
3 mines 5 picks (2.02x, 49.6%) 10 picks (5.05x, 19.8%) 13 picks (10.45x, 9.57%)
5 mines 3 picks (2.02x, 49.6%) 7 picks (6.20x, 16.1%) 9 picks (12.16x, 8.22%)
10 mines 2 picks (2.86x, 35.0%) 3 picks (5.05x, 19.8%) 5 picks (17.69x, 5.65%)

Each cell shows the fewest safe picks that reach the target, the multiplier at that point (100% RTP) and the chance of surviving that far.

Notice how quickly the odds fall. Reaching 2x with 3 mines takes only a handful of picks, while 10x asks for a run you will complete roughly one round in ten. That is not a flaw in the game. It is the same fair trade at every setting.

What a Mines Strategy Can and Cannot Do

What a plan can do

  • Choose your variance. Few mines with many picks gives smooth, small cash-outs. Many mines with one or two picks gives rare, large ones.
  • Fix a cash-out point before the round. Deciding “three safe tiles and out” in advance takes greed out of the decision.
  • Size bets to your bankroll and set a stop-loss and stop-win, so a bad run cannot take more than you planned.

What it cannot do

  • Change the RTP. Every pick count and mine count has the same expected return.
  • Predict mine positions from earlier rounds, corners or the centre of the grid. Positions come from seeds and are independent each round.
  • Fix a bad session with bigger bets. Raising stakes after losses only concentrates the risk.

A Simple Mines Routine

  1. Pick your mine count first. It sets how fast the risk grows with each tile.
  2. Choose a cash-out multiplier from the table and stick to it for the session.
  3. Bet small against your budget. Many players keep each round to a small fraction of the amount they can afford to lose.
  4. Check a few rounds in the Provably Fair tab to see the grid was fixed before you clicked.
  5. Stay inside the Zero Edge allowance ($50,000 wagered a day, $1,000 max bet) for the 100% RTP.

Mines Strategy Myths

  • “Mines hide in the corners.” Positions are drawn from seeds, so no region of the grid is safer.
  • “A mine is due after three safe rounds.” Rounds are independent. This is the gambler’s fallacy.
  • “Start with 1 mine to build a bankroll.” The expected return is the same at 1 mine, so you are only choosing smaller swings.
  • “Martingale will recover losses.” A losing run plus a max-bet limit ends it; the dice page has the numbers.

Niko’s Degen Take on Mines Strategy

Degen take

Mines is where degens lie to themselves the most. Corners are safer. Three safe rounds means a mine is due. None of it is real, because the grid is locked from the seeds before your first click. The only decision is how greedy you are, and the table shows exactly what greed costs: ten picks on 3 mines pays about 5x and lands roughly one round in five.

My rule is to pick the cash-out before the round and never negotiate with myself mid-round, because that is where the leak is. The calculator is there so you can see how spicy your target really is before you click. If it says 4%, that is a lottery ticket. Size it like one.

Is there a winning Mines strategy?

No. Each round has the same expected return, your bet times the RTP, whatever number of mines or picks you choose. A strategy only decides how that return is delivered: smoothly or in rare large wins.

How many mines should I pick?

It depends on the variance you want. One to three mines allows many safe picks and steadier sessions. Ten or more makes every pick risky and pays large multipliers quickly. The expected return is identical.

How many tiles should I reveal before cashing out?

There is no best number for expected value. Decide on a multiplier in advance using the odds table, for example the pick count that pays about 2x, and cash out there every time so the decision does not depend on mood.

Can you predict where the mines are?

No. The grid is generated from the server seed, client seed and nonce before you click, and a new round uses a new nonce. You can verify the grid afterwards in the Provably Fair tab but you cannot work it out beforehand.

How is the Mines multiplier calculated?

For a fair board the multiplier after k safe picks is the RTP divided by the chance of surviving k picks, which is C(25 − mines, k) ÷ C(25, k) on a 5×5 grid. Our calculator on this page does the sum for you.

Is Mines rigged?

A provably fair Mines grid is fixed before your first click and can be checked afterwards. See our is Mines rigged guide for how to verify a round and what normal bad luck looks like.
