What It Means
The reveal changes how one story reads
Freakbob — the SpongeBob-costumed figure in the Duel casino blackjack clips that did more than anything else to define Duel’s reputation — including the session in which the character climbed onto the table and simulated a sex act mid-game. The question of who was inside the SpongeBob suit stayed open for months, enough that a Polymarket market grew around it with reportedly more than $300 million in volume and a candidate list running from streamer Adin Ross to the US Vice President, which tells you how seriously the market took itself.
The answer was the owner. That is worth pausing on, because it reframes the earlier defence that these were the antics of contractors who got carried away. The most notorious character on the platform was being played by the person who owns it.
What the policy change actually says
Ketola drew a distinction between provocation with a point and provocation for its own sake — satire on one side, and on the other, in his framing, someone repeating a slur because they could not think of a joke. He promised the next season would carry more direction, oversight and intention, and said the difference he cares about is between creative freedom and creative laziness.
He was equally explicit about what is not happening. No list of forbidden topics, no compliance manual, no transformation into a corporate product. The stated mechanism is judgment and taste rather than rules.
Our read: a real distinction, an unfalsifiable promise
The satire-versus-laziness line is a genuine one, and it is more thoughtful than the “we regret any offence caused” boilerplate the industry usually produces. It also happens to be the framing that concedes the least.
The problem is that it is unauditable. A policy resting on taste rather than boundaries cannot be tested against a case in advance, and the same judgment that has to enforce it is the judgment that greenlit a Nazi-costume roleplay at a live table. Rules are how an organisation constrains itself when its instincts are the thing in question, and this pivot explicitly declines to adopt any. Whether it means anything will be visible only in what the next season actually broadcasts.
And then the apology
Days later Ketola addressed viewers and two rival founders in what was framed as an apology, the substance of which was that he had bullied them for failing to build the best casino in the world. It is contrition in form and a boast in content, aimed at Stake and Gamdom rather than at anyone affected by the streams.
We would not read too much into a joke, except for its timing. Publishing it in the same week as a promise of more oversight muddies the promise, and it lands as a signal that the underlying strategy — scandal and rivalry as marketing — has not changed at all.
What this means for players
It is the first sign of self-correction from an operator that had shown none, and that is worth acknowledging rather than dismissing. Our earlier coverage noted that nothing had produced consequences; this is a consequence, even if a self-administered one.
But it changes nothing about the mechanics we actually test, and nothing about counterparty risk until suppliers, payment providers and the licensing authority signal how they read it. The honest position is that the operator has said the right kind of thing and has not yet demonstrated anything. We will judge the next season on what it broadcasts.
This may be the biggest reveal in the history of the internet..
For months, rumors swirled about the true identity of Freakbob, and the Polymarket had over $300M of volume

Duel's Response: Frequently Asked Questions
Duel owner Ossi “Monarch” Ketola revealed in late July 2026 that he had been playing the masked Freakbob character himself. Freakbob featured in the blackjack clips that defined the platform’s reputation, including the session in which the character simulated a sex act on the table.
Reportedly over $300 million in traded volume. Pre-reveal odds put streamer Adin Ross at 35%, US Vice President JD Vance at 26% and Dave Portnoy at 13% — a candidate list that shows how much of it was meme rather than analysis.
Ketola summarised it as the slop going while the danger stays: characters, comedy and unpredictability continue, but content he classes as pointless shock is cut. He explicitly rejected any list of banned topics or compliance document, citing judgment, taste and accountability instead.
Not meaningfully. On 31 July 2026 he issued what was framed as an apology to Stake co-founder Ed Craven and Gamdom founder Felix Roskrós, the substance of which was that he had bullied them for not building the best casino in the world. It reads as a boast rather than contrition.
Too early to say, and by design hard to verify. A policy based on taste rather than rules cannot be tested against a case in advance, and the judgment enforcing it is the same judgment that approved the earlier segments. The next season is the only real evidence.
Not on its own. Our rating is under review on the question of whether brand conduct belongs in a trust score, and a stated intention without demonstrated follow-through does not settle it either way.
