Duel Arena Connect: Connect 4, 5 and 6 Rules and Clocks (2026)

Short version: Connect in Duel Arena is the drop-a-piece classic with three board sizes: Connect 4 on 7×6, Connect 5 on 9×7 and Connect 6 on 11×8. Each player has a chess-style clock (3+0, 3+2, 5+0 or 5+3) that only runs on their turn, and running out of time loses on the spot. A full board with no line is a draw and both stakes are refunded. Free Practice mode plays against a bot. We read the rules panel and tried the free mode, but we did not play for stakes.

How Connect Works in Duel Arena

Take turns dropping a piece into a column. It falls to the lowest free cell. Line up four, five or six across, up or diagonally, matching the variant you picked, to win.

The Three Variants

Variant Board Pieces in a line to win
Connect 4 7 columns by 6 rows 4
Connect 5 9 columns by 7 rows 5
Connect 6 11 columns by 8 rows 6

The lobby sets the variant. A full board with no line is a draw and both stakes are refunded.

Chess-Style Clocks

Time control Meaning
3+0 3 minutes per side, no time added
3+2 3 minutes per side, 2 seconds added after each move
5+0 5 minutes per side, no time added
5+3 5 minutes per side, 3 seconds added after each move

Your clock only runs on your turn, and the increment is credited the moment you drop a piece, so playing quickly can win time back. No single move is capped: you may spend most of your time on one drop, but running out of time loses the game immediately.

The increment is smaller than it sounds. On a 7×6 board there are only 42 cells, so each player makes at most 21 moves, which means a +3 increment can add at most 63 seconds over a whole game.

What a Match Looks Like

Connect practice on Duel Arena: a 7×6 board with two blue and two orange pieces dropped
Practice mode: a 7×6 Connect 4 board after the first moves against the bot.

On the free setup screen you choose the board (Connect 4, 5 or 6), the time control, and who plays first: random, you or the bot. The game screen then shows both players’ names and clocks above a grid of empty circles; your pieces are blue and the bot’s are orange.

Practice Before You Stake

  1. Use Practice against the bot and try all three board sizes; larger boards play very differently.
  2. Pick a time control that suits you. With no increment (3+0, 5+0) every second counts.
  3. Remember the clock only runs on your turn, so deep thinking is costly but not capped per move.
  4. Check the stake and any fee in the lobby before playing for money; we could not find a published Arena fee.

Niko’s Degen Take on Arena Connect

Degen take

Connect with real clocks is the sneaky serious one. Connect 4 is a solved game on 7×6, but nobody plays perfectly under a 3+0 clock, so time pressure is where games get decided. The bigger boards are a different animal, so do not assume your Connect 4 instincts carry over.

The increment math is funny. On 7×6 you will make at most 21 moves, so a +3 increment is worth about a minute at best, which means the base time is what matters. Beating the bot in Practice does not mean you will beat a human who knows the openings. If you are new, 5+3 is the sane pick.

What Connect variants does Duel Arena have?

Connect 4 on a 7×6 board, Connect 5 on 9×7 and Connect 6 on 11×8. The lobby sets the variant.

How do the Connect clocks work?

Each player has their own clock for the whole game, picked in the lobby as 3+0, 3+2, 5+0 or 5+3 (minutes per side plus seconds added per move). The clock only runs on your turn, and running out of time loses.

What happens if the Connect board fills up?

A full board with no line is a draw, and both stakes are refunded.

Can I play Duel Arena Connect against a bot?

Yes. The free Practice mode lets you choose who plays first (random, you or the bot) and plays against a bot with nothing at stake.

Can I spend a long time on one Connect move?

Yes. No single move is capped, but your clock keeps running and running out of time loses the game immediately.
