What Is RTP in Casino Games? RTP vs House Edge Explained (2026)

Short version: RTP (return to player) is the percentage of all money wagered that a game pays back to players over the long run, and the house edge is simply 100% minus RTP. A game with 96% RTP keeps 4% and pays back 96%, on average, across a huge number of bets. It says nothing about what will happen in your next session. Duel runs its Originals at 100% RTP inside a daily Zero Edge allowance ($50,000 wagered a day, $1,000 max bet) and at 99.9% beyond it, which is unusually high. Below are typical RTPs by game, what they cost per $10,000 wagered, and how to read them.

RTP and House Edge in One Line

RTP = 100% − house edge. If a roulette wheel has a 2.70% house edge, its RTP is 97.30%. Both numbers describe the same fact from opposite sides. They are long-run averages over millions of rounds, set by the rules and payouts of the game, and they do not change because you bet more, bet less or switch your pattern.

RTP does not tell you how often you win or how big the wins are. That is volatility. Two slots can both have 96% RTP, one paying small wins constantly and the other paying rarely but large. Over a short session either can finish well above or well below 96%.

Typical RTP and House Edge by Game

Game or bet Typical RTP House edge Expected loss per $10,000 wagered
American roulette 94.74% 5.26% $526
European roulette 97.30% 2.70% $270
Slots (typical range midpoint) 96% 4.00% $400
Sportsbook at -110 on both sides 95.45% 4.55% $455
Baccarat, banker bet 98.94% 1.06% $106
Blackjack, basic strategy, typical rules 99.50% 0.50% $50
Duel Originals beyond the Zero Edge allowance 99.90% 0.10% $10
Duel Originals inside the Zero Edge allowance 100% 0.00% $0

Roulette, baccarat and blackjack figures are the standard published values. Slot RTP varies by game and casino (roughly 92% to 97%), so 96% is an illustration. Blackjack assumes perfect basic strategy.

How Duel’s 100% RTP Works

Duel’s Originals (Dice, Crash, Plinko, Mines and Blackjack) carry a base house edge of 0.1%. Inside your daily Zero Edge allowance, every bet gets an instant 0.1% rakeback, which nets the edge to zero and gives a 100% RTP. The allowance is $50,000 wagered a day, $1,000 max bet, and it resets daily. Once it is used up the rebate stops until the reset, leaving 99.9% RTP. Original slots are 100% RTP by design, and above the allowance they get a scaling edge between 0.01% and 1.84% that is shown above the bet controls.

Zero edge does not mean you cannot lose. With no edge, your expected result is zero and variance decides any given session, roughly a coin flip between being ahead or behind. Our Zero Edge page goes through the mechanics, and the rakeback guide covers how Duel’s rakeback works on games that carry an edge.

How to Use RTP When You Choose a Game

  • Higher RTP does not mean you win more often. It means you lose less per dollar wagered on average.
  • One session proves nothing. RTP is measured over enormous numbers of rounds. A thousand spins can be far from it.
  • Betting patterns do not change it. No bet-sizing system alters the house edge; see our dice strategy and Plinko strategy maths.
  • Check the game, not the casino. RTP is set per game and can differ by operator for the same slot, so look for the figure in the game’s information screen.
  • Volatility matters for bankroll. Low volatility gives steadier results, high volatility gives rare large wins and long dry spells.

Niko’s Degen Take on RTP

Degen take

RTP is the number casinos hope you never learn to read. 96% sounds fine until you do the maths and see $400 of expected loss per $10,000 wagered. That is the real price of the entertainment. I look at RTP before I look at the theme, the bonus or the streamer endorsement.

A higher RTP will not make you win more often, it just means you lose less per dollar, and volatility decides whether the ride is smooth or insane. Duel’s 100% inside Zero Edge is why I cover it at all. Boring maths, but boring maths is what keeps a degen solvent.

What does RTP mean in casino games?

RTP stands for return to player. It is the percentage of all wagers a game pays back to players over the long run. A 96% RTP game returns $96 for every $100 wagered on average, across a very large number of bets.

What is the difference between RTP and house edge?

They are two views of the same number. House edge is 100% minus RTP, so a 96% RTP game has a 4% house edge.

What is a good RTP?

Higher is better for the player. Slots commonly sit between roughly 92% and 97%, blackjack with basic strategy near 99.5%, and Duel’s Originals at 99.9% to 100%.

Does RTP guarantee how much I will win?

No. RTP is a long-run average over millions of rounds and says nothing about a single session, which can land far above or below it.

Can RTP change?

The RTP of a game is set by its design, but the same slot can be offered at different RTPs by different casinos. Duel’s own Originals are at 100% RTP inside the daily Zero Edge allowance and 99.9% beyond it.

What is the RTP at Duel?

Originals run at 100% RTP inside the daily Zero Edge allowance ($50,000 wagered a day, $1,000 max bet) and 99.9% beyond it, with Beef at 99.2% by design. Slots and other games with an edge also pay 50% of the house edge back as rakeback (60% on Duel Blackjack).
